Limassol is modern Cyprus in a nutshell - city bustle, endless shopping and a vigorous night life, side by side with carefully preserved sites in the city's ancient harbour area. Nearby are excellent beaches overlooking the warm Mediterranean sea.
The backcloth of the Troodos mountains, snow capped in winter and its villages nestling amongst the pine forests in the foothills provides a calming change to the city. Here many of Cyprus' best wines are produced and each September the Wine Festival celebrates this bounty. A short drive away is the castle where Richard the Lion Heart married his bride Berengaria after conquering the island in 1191 and Kourion's ancient Greco-Roman amphitheatre.
